Communities are facing increasingly tangible climate change and environmental crises. Greenpeace Indonesia reports that these conditions are severely impacting farmers and fishers. Erratic weather patterns make it difficult for farmers to predict planting times, while pests and plant diseases are becoming more problematic. This crisis threatens everyday food staples like rice, vegetables, fish, fruits, and spices. Unfortunately, efforts to address these issues are still uneven.
Adila Isfandiari, Climate and Energy Campaigner at Greenpeace Indonesia, emphasizes that even small actions can make a big difference in combating climate change. She highlights that these changes can start from home, often led by women or mothers. Adila explains, “Women are the managers of the household, and the small actions taken at home can contribute positively to solving climate issues,” she said during her meeting with Kompas.com in Jakarta.

The Role of Moms in Addressing the Climate Crisis
Here are several steps moms can take to contribute to combating climate change:
Choose Local Foods
Opting for locally sourced food not only supports local farmers but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. “Choosing local foods means cutting down on distribution processes, which are high in carbon emissions,” Adila said. “Local options are also often fresher and healthier.”
Practice Mindful Eating
Mindful eating can help reduce food waste at home. Moms can ensure meals are portioned appropriately and that leftovers are used effectively. This helps minimize food waste and reduces the environmental impact of food disposal.
Sort Waste
Starting a habit of sorting waste at home can positively impact climate change. By segregating recyclable and non-recyclable materials, families can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Meanwhile, recycling methods (such as for organic waste and others) also have the potential to transform what was once considered worthless into something more valuable. “This habit helps us reduce environmental pollution, especially in soil, water, and air,” she adds.

Save Energy
Beyond food, moms can promote energy-saving practices at home. This includes turning off electronic devices when not in use, conserving water, and choosing energy-efficient appliances. “Instilling these habits in the family can amplify the environmental benefits from home,” Adila added.
By adopting these practices, moms can play a crucial role in fostering a more sustainable lifestyle and contribute to larger environmental movements.
