Warga Asri, do you know that energy use in Indonesia continues to increase yearly? This increasing energy use is very concerning as the impact of high energy use can threaten the balance of the ecosystem.
Excessive energy consumption will potentially hurt the environment, possibly leading to climate change and reducing the availability of natural resources.
To avoid excessive energy consumption, let’s see simple ways to conserve energy in the following article!
Why Should We Conserve Energy?
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, from 2014 to 2023, there was a 60% increase in energy consumption.
Indonesia’s final energy consumption in 2023 is equivalent to 1.2 billion barrels of oil (BOE), which in 2014 was only 760.49 million. This energy consumption includes industrial, transportation, household, and commercial uses.
The amount of energy use that increases every year can present a serious problem, given the limited amount of non-renewable energy, such as petroleum.
If this continues to happen, it can have a negative impact on the environment and sustainability. Therefore, learning how to conserve energy can help proper and effective utilization of natural resources without hurting the environment.
How to Save Energy at Home
Saving energy starts from small things, like changing your daily habits. Here are some energy saving tips you can try at home:
1. Turn Off Electronics When Not in Use
The easiest way to save electrical energy on a daily basis is to turn off electronic devices when not in use.
To do so, turn off lights, air conditioners, fans, and televisions and unplug electronic devices from switches when not in use. Though simple, this practice can significantly reduce energy usage.
2. Use Water Sparingly
Clean water is a critical resource, but the supply may run short in the future. About 97% of the earth’s water is seawater, which is highly polluted and cannot be directly used as clean water.
Therefore, you can use water wisely by utilizing rainwater or water from washing rice and vegetables to water plants, closing taps when you don’t need to water anything, and using low-flow showers.
3. Utilize Natural Energy
Natural energy from the sun may help reduce your daily electricity consumption. You can maximize natural lighting from the sun by opening curtains or windows in the morning and afternoon as an alternative to using lights.
In addition, you can also use the sun’s energy to dry your clothes naturally instead of using a dryer that requires electricity. Drying clothes under the sun helps them dry naturally.

4. Ride Public Vehicles
Riding public transportation is a way to save non-renewable energy such as fuel. Public transportation is designed to carry several passengers at once; hence, making it a more fuel-efficient type of ride.
For example, a full bus can carry 30 to 50 people, so the fuel usage per passenger is much lower than a private car.
In addition, the use of public transportation can also reduce air pollution and carbon footprint.
According to Climate for Health, the use of public transport is believed to reduce CO2 emissions per person by up to 45% compared to private cars, contributing to the reduction of air pollution and climate change impacts.
By using public transportation such as buses, trains, and angkot, you can not only reduce your energy usage but also participate in protecting the environment.
5. Use Energy-Efficient Electronic Devices
As public awareness of energy efficiency increases, many electronic devices are now designed to be energy-efficient. Some are LED lights, refrigerators with inverter technology, inverter air conditioners, LED televisions, and front-loading washing machines.
These technologies help improve the efficiency of electricity usage while still maintaining the devices’ quality and functionality.
The following are examples of energy-saving labels usually displayed on electronic goods.
Tip: Before buying electronics, choose a brand with an energy-saving label or compare its power consumption first.
An electronic device will be categorized as energy-efficient if its power consumption is low compared to the standard consumption per product. For example, an LED lamp will be classified as energy efficient if it has a power consumption of around 5-10 watts per lamp.
For household appliances such as refrigerators with consumption below 100 kWh/year, they are also usually considered energy efficient.
6. Utilize Renewable Energy
Switching to renewable energy may conserve energy and reduce dependence on non-renewable resources.
Renewable energy comes from natural sources such as sun, wind, water, and geothermal.
Renewable energy implementation can be done in various sectors, from households to industries.
For example, solar panel installations on rooftops to generate electricity, wind turbines to generate energy in areas with high wind speeds, and hydroelectric power plants in rivers or dams for large-scale energy production.
In Indonesia, renewable energy utilization is increasingly encouraged by the government and the private sector.
One company involved in renewable energy development is PT Krakatau Chandra Energi, a subsidiary of the Chandra Asri Group. PT Krakatau Chandra actively develops renewable energy projects such as solar power plants and electrical services for Electric Vehicles (EVs) development.
Learning ways to conserve energy may look simple, but it can help protect the environment and maintain the sustainability of the ecosystem.
By using energy wisely, you can contribute positively to environmental sustainability. Let’s get used to saving energy for a healthier earth.
Speaking of protecting the earth, Indonesia Asri has also carried out many initiatives to raise public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
Through educational and collaborative programs, Indonesia Asri seeks to educate the public about simple ways that can be done to reduce negative impacts on the environment, ranging from sorting waste and reducing the use of plastic to using renewable energy.
