The Importance of Women’s Roles in Leading a Sustainable Lifestyle

In the face of environmental destruction threats, it’s crucial to recognize the significant role women play in adopting a sustainable lifestyle.

Women are educators and managers within families, influencing daily living habits. Therefore, they have a major impact on whether a sustainable lifestyle is adopted or not.

As Nada Arini, an ecopreneur and Co-Founder of Sustainable Indonesia, highlighted in the talk show “Creating #IndonesiaAsri from a Cross-Generational Perspective” held in Jakarta (11/23/23):

“As women, especially mothers, we manage households. Every decision, even the small ones, has a significant impact,” Nada said.

From purchasing household necessities to deciding what food the family consumes and choosing daily attire, these decisions are often made by women.

“These are daily decisions, often hundreds a day. By making environmentally friendly choices, visible to our spouses, children, and in-laws, we can influence them,” Nada shared from her experience.

When family members see these decisions, they become accustomed to sustainable living practices.

Nada also emphasized that adopting a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t always require making large changes.

“For those out there, don’t feel discouraged if you can’t make major changes. Small changes can have a huge impact,” she advised.

Small changes in the household include sorting food waste, turning off bathroom lights when not in use, wearing second-hand clothes instead of new ones, bringing your own tumbler or lunchbox when traveling, and using public transportation to school.

Nada believes it’s vital for women, as household managers, to commit to these changes to avoid negative impacts on future generations.

“If we don’t act, there will be no fertile land left, and all the water will be polluted. That’s why we need to commit to practicing sustainable living. I need to make good decisions daily to ensure a better future for our children,” Nada explained.

On the other hand, she reminded us that sustainable living should not be expected to yield instant results in environmental improvement.

“We are investing. We invest in good habits now, and the benefits will be for our children in the future,” Nada added.

So, how can we ‘invest’ in adopting good habits for the environment?

Here are some enjoyable ways to start incorporating sustainable living into your routine:

#AksiAsri365 Challenge

Chandra Asri Group, a chemical and infrastructure solutions company in Indonesia, has initiated a campaign to raise environmental awareness across generations.

Through the #IndonesiaAsri campaign, the goal is for every generation to develop and implement sustainable environmental practices.

As explained by Chrysanthi Tarigan, Head of Corporate Communication at Chandra Asri Group, the #IndonesiaAsri campaign focuses on three approaches:

  1. Education on the importance of sustainable waste management
  2. Initiatives to reduce carbon footprints in daily life
  3. Real actions to encourage people to actively engage in positive environmental changes, starting from the smallest steps.

“One of our efforts to provide education is the #IndonesiaAsri microsite (https://indonesiaasri.com/) as an information hub and movement center for actionable steps accessible to the public, aiming to enhance our understanding of sustainable living,” said Chrysanthi.

When you visit indonesiaasri.com, you’ll find educational content and inspiration on sustainable living. One of the initiatives you can participate in is the #AksiAsri365 challenge.

This program offers a series of activities focused on environmental priorities through educational, informative, and creative approaches.

The challenge runs for one year, starting December 1, 2023, and ending November 30, 2024. You can join through the microsite indonesiaasri.com.

Participating in this challenge is also a fun way to integrate sustainable living into your lifestyle.

You can register by creating a Warga Asri account and completing your personal profile to join the challenge.

Once registered, you’ll receive daily reminders about activities to perform and their environmental benefits.

Participants in the #AksiAsri365 challenge can upload one to four photos and notes related to their daily activities.

Participants who complete the challenge will earn points and be eligible for exciting prizes from #IndonesiaAsri.

So, are you ready to start new habits and adopt a sustainable lifestyle?
