In the face of environmental destruction threats, it’s crucial to recognize the significant role women play in adopting a sustainable lifestyle.
Women are educators and managers within families, influencing daily living habits. Therefore, they have a major impact on whether a sustainable lifestyle is adopted or not.
As Nada Arini, an ecopreneur and Co-Founder of Sustainable Indonesia, highlighted in the talk show “Creating #IndonesiaAsri from a Cross-Generational Perspective” held in Jakarta (11/23/23):
“As women, especially mothers, we manage households. Every decision, even the small ones, has a significant impact,” Nada said.
From purchasing household necessities to deciding what food the family consumes and choosing daily attire, these decisions are often made by women.
“These are daily decisions, often hundreds a day. By making environmentally friendly choices, visible to our spouses, children, and in-laws, we can influence them,” Nada shared from her experience.
When family members see these decisions, they become accustomed to sustainable living practices.
Nada also emphasized that adopting a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t always require making large changes.
“For those out there, don’t feel discouraged if you can’t make major changes. Small changes can have a huge impact,” she advised.
Small changes in the household include sorting food waste, turning off bathroom lights when not in use, wearing second-hand clothes instead of new ones, bringing your own tumbler or lunchbox when traveling, and using public transportation to school.
Nada believes it’s vital for women, as household managers, to commit to these changes to avoid negative impacts on future generations.
“If we don’t act, there will be no fertile land left, and all the water will be polluted. That’s why we need to commit to practicing sustainable living. I need to make good decisions daily to ensure a better future for our children,” Nada explained.
On the other hand, she reminded us that sustainable living should not be expected to yield instant results in environmental improvement.
“We are investing. We invest in good habits now, and the benefits will be for our children in the future,” Nada added.
So, how can we ‘invest’ in adopting good habits for the environment?
Here are some enjoyable ways to start incorporating sustainable living into your routine:
