Net-Zero Emissions: The Concept and How to Achieve It

By Tim Indonesia Asri

You may have frequently encountered discussions on sustainability, a topic that has gained increasing attention in recent years. Amid the growing reality of climate change, realizing net-zero emissions is a crucial first step toward climate action.

Net-zero emissions are not solely the responsibility of governments or large corporations; it is also a concept that individuals can understand and apply in their daily lives. Read this article further to gain a precise and practical understanding of net zero emissions.

What Are Net-Zero Emissions?

What Are Net-Zero Emissions

Net-zero emissions are greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere that are offset by those absorbed or removed through measures such as reforestation, carbon capture technologies, and renewable energy.

The term Net Zero Emissions (NZE) first emerged and gained prominence during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in 2015. At that time, 197 countries agreed to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2°C through long-term emissions reduction commitments, including NZE targets.

The concept of zero emissions does not imply the complete absence of emissions. Instead, net-zero emissions means any remaining emissions must be offset so they do not contribute to further global warming. The objective is to stabilize global temperatures and prevent increasingly severe impacts of climate change.

Why Is Achieving Net-Zero Emissions Important?

Achieving net-zero emissions is a critical priority, as it directly supports efforts to curb global warming. The higher the concentration of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, the faster global temperatures rise, increasing the risk of extreme climate change.

Moreover, commitments to net-zero emissions drive clean-energy innovation, industrial efficiency, and more sustainable environmental policies. The impacts extend beyond the environment, influencing human quality of life, economic stability, and the sustainability of future generations.

How to Achieve Net Zero Emissions

How to Achieve Net Zero Emissions

Achieving net zero emissions requires collective efforts from governments, industries, and society. One of the primary steps is transitioning energy systems from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

Energy efficiency must also be prioritized, both through the adoption of energy-saving technologies and the improvement of operational standards in the industrial sector. In addition, the development of carbon capture technologies helps reduce emissions that are difficult to eliminate.

Furthermore, planting more trees and maintaining sustainable forest management are essential measures to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide, as forests act as highly effective natural carbon sinks through photosynthesis.

People can also contribute by reducing private transportation, improving waste management, and using environmentally friendly fuels, thereby accelerating the achievement of this target.

Net Zero Emissions Targets in Indonesia and Globally

Globally, many countries have set net-zero emissions targets to limit the increase in global temperatures to below 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement.

The European Union, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, while China targets 2060 and India 2070. Each country pursues a different pathway based on its energy capacity, technological development, and economic needs.

Indonesia has also committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier, as outlined in the Long-Term Strategy for Low Carbon and Climate Resilience (LTS-LCCR).

These targets encompass the energy transition toward renewable energy sources, reductions in emissions from deforestation, improvements in industrial efficiency, and the development of low-carbon technologies.

How to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Daily Life

How to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Daily Life

Reducing carbon emissions does not always require large-scale actions. In fact, there are many simple steps you can take in your daily life to contribute to achieving net-zero emissions. Some of them include:

Reducing the Use of Private Vehicles

Prioritize walking, cycling, or using public transportation for short trips. Although simple, these activities can significantly reduce emissions. In addition to being more environmentally friendly, walking and cycling also improve physical fitness by encouraging active movement.

Reducing Excessive Electricity Use

Make it a habit to turn off lights and electronic devices when they are not in use. You may not realize how much electricity is wasted through such small habits. By using electricity more efficiently, your carbon footprint will automatically decrease.

Making an Effort to Reduce Food Waste

Shop according to your needs to avoid wasting food. By managing portions and storage more wisely, you help reduce emissions generated from food waste.

Reducing Red Meat Consumption

Cutting back on red meat even once a week can have a significant impact. Replace red meat with lighter, healthier plant-based meals. In addition to benefiting your health, this habit helps lower emissions from the livestock sector.

Saving Water

Use water only as needed when bathing, washing, or cleaning the house, as water treatment and distribution processes require substantial energy. By conserving water, you also help reduce associated energy-related emissions.

A commitment to a healthier future cannot be separated from efforts to understand net zero emissions and how we can contribute through simple actions. Every small step we take can have a tangible impact on the planet’s sustainability.
