The Most Pedestrian-Friendly Cities in the World
Several cities in the world are beginning to develop facilities supporting pedestrians, either for locals or tourists. From comfortable sidewalks to integrated public transportation, everything is managed to create safer and more convenient mobility.
Every city has its own ways to actualize a convenient environment for pedestrians. According to Time Out, here are some of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the world:
Seoul, South Korea

Seoul, South Korea, is one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the world with a walkability score of 93%. Despite being a bustling metropolitan city, Seoul succeeded in providing a safe and accessible environment for pedestrians.
It also keeps developing areas within walking distance. Using the Walking Daily Zone concept, the city government aims for every significant facility to be accessible in 30 minutes on foot.
With this concept, both locals and tourists can access various places easily without relying heavily on private cars.
Edinburgh, Scotland

Similar to Seoul, Edinburgh also has a 93% walkability score. This city is popular as a center of amusement destinations. Therefore, there are many must-visit places that are accessible on foot.
Some iconic destinations include Edinburgh Castle and Calton Hill. They are located in proximity, making them accessible and safe for pedestrians. The walking ambiance is also lively during big festivals, including the Edinburgh Fringe.

New York City, United States

The next city worth discussing is New York City, United States. This city has a walkability score of 91% and offers many areas that can be explored by walking.
For example, in Manhattan, the grid-like street layout makes it easier for pedestrians to find their way around this densely populated urban area. Furthermore, several areas in Brooklyn, such as Williamsburg and DUMBO, are also great for exploring on foot because they have many interesting spots located close to one another.
Oslo, Norway

Over the past few years, Oslo has continued to develop policies that prioritize the public interest while reducing dependence on motor vehicles. These efforts have earned Oslo a walkability score of 89% and rank fifth on Time Out’s 2026 list of the most pedestrian-friendly cities.
One of the city’s priorities is making Oslo’s historic downtown area more pedestrian-friendly. This is accomplished by reducing parking spaces and building bike lanes to help ease traffic congestion.
Vehicle restrictions implemented from 2017 to 2019 have also brought about significant changes. Today, most of Oslo’s downtown area has very few vehicles, allowing pedestrians to make better use of the urban space.
Munich, Germany

Munich is also worth exploring on foot. According to the most pedestrian-friendly city by Time Out 2026, Munich got a walkability score of 75%.
The main pedestrian area connects Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Marienplatz, with a variety of shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions along the way. This area has existed since 1972 and was one of the first car-free shopping areas in Germany.
The Most Pedestrian-Friendly Cities in Indonesia
Indonesia also has some cities that are beginning to develop pedestrian-friendly areas, supporting mobility. Here are some of the examples:
Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is known as one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities, primarily because its downtown area features plenty of pedestrian space, such as Malioboro, which continues to be developed as a tourist area that is more comfortable for pedestrians.
According to a Global Walkability Index study of three segments of Malioboro Street, this area received a score of 52.75 from researchers and 50.51 from respondents.
This score falls into the “Waiting to Walk” category according to the standards of the Walkability Surveys in Asian Cities, indicating that pedestrian facilities in this area are considered fairly supportive of walking.
Bandung

Bandung has many interesting areas to explore on foot, such as Braga Street. Because so many places and amenities are close by, this area is teeming with pedestrians.
Based on a Walkability Index study published in the ITB Jurnal Teknik Sipil ITB (2024) on six routes in the Braga Street area, the index values ranged from 46.11 to 72.78. Another study published in the Jurnal Pengembangan Kota (2025) also showed that the pedestrian paths in Braga are quite conducive to walking on weekdays, although visitor density on holidays can affect comfort.
To improve pedestrian convenience, the Bandung City Government continues to improve pedestrian facilities on several streets in the city. The improvement on Braga Street had reached 53.71% by 2026.
