What Is Sustainable Living and Why Should We Adopt It?

By Tim Indonesia Asri

Today, public consciousness about the importance of protecting the environment continues to grow. Many people are beginning to realize that their daily choices and habits have a significant impact on the Earth’s sustainability.

In an effort to reduce this impact, more and more people are now adopting sustainable living practices in their daily lives.

Sustainable living is a lifestyle concept that prioritizes environmental stewardship and promotes more mindful consumption patterns. Curious about this eco-friendly lifestyle concept? Read on for more information.

What Is Sustainable Living?

What Is Sustainable Living

Sustainable living is a lifestyle concept aimed at reducing negative environmental impacts. This lifestyle involves strategies to preserve the environment so that future generations can enjoy it.

People who practice sustainable living are aware that natural resources and the environment are steadily depleting, so they must be used and preserved wisely.

As a result, they can make crucial decisions, such as reducing carbon emissions, shopping responsibly, conserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and living in line with the principles of energy efficiency. In fact, this lifestyle can also inspire more sustainable products or innovations.

Sustainable living can be achieved with support from many parties. The public needs education and training on sustainable living so that more people understand the concept and put it into practice.

Certainly, active participation from both the public and the government in implementing sustainable living practices can accelerate the transition to cleaner energy, foster a more inclusive society, and promote long-term well-being.

The Main Goal of Sustainable Living

The Main Goal of Sustainable Living

Sustainable living aims to achieve environmental balance. By ensuring that resource consumption remains in harmony with the Earth’s capacity to replenish those resources.

The concept of sustainability generally centers on three main pillars: environmental, economic, and social, often referred to as planet, profit, and people. Achieving sustainable living means balancing these three pillars.

Furthermore, sustainable living is tied to equitable access to resources. This can be achieved by ensuring social sustainability, respecting workers’ rights, and prioritizing eco-friendly products.

Sustainable living is also closely tied to activities that potentially mitigate climate change.

Our World in Data explains that human-generated greenhouse gas emissions are the primary cause of current climate change.

Rising global temperatures can cause polar ice to melt faster, thereby raising sea levels. Not only that, but global warming is also causing extreme changes in rainfall patterns and temperatures.

Unless balanced with more eco-friendly lifestyle changes, climate change can have various negative impacts on living organisms and ecosystems on Earth. Therefore, adopting sustainable living practices is a crucial step toward mitigating these impacts.

Examples of Sustainable Living

Examples of Sustainable Living

When it comes to sustainable living, you can start with simple steps! Everyone can play a part in creating a greener environment. Let’s check out some ways to do so below!

1. Save Energy

One activity that significantly impacts the environment is saving energy. You can turn off unused electronic devices and ensure your home has good ventilation so you use less lighting, air conditioning/heating, and fans as a result of smooth air circulation and natural light.

In addition to using electronics wisely, you can also choose more energy-efficient devices and use energy-saving light bulbs. These bulbs, such as LED lights, typically consume less energy, have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs, and produce less heat.

You can also choose modes of transportation that produce fewer emissions and require less energy, such as walking or cycling.

2. Reducing Water Usage

Not only energy but also your water usage needs to be reduced. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that efficient water use can help preserve water supplies for both the present and the future.

Running water also consumes energy. For example, water running from a faucet for 5 minutes uses as much energy as a 60-watt incandescent light bulb burning for 14 hours.

Not to mention if you use that water for cooking, showering, and cleaning the house. Obviously, those activities also consume a significant amount of energy.

Water usage is also typically linked to water heaters. The EPA explains that water heaters usually account for a quarter of your electricity bill. Yet, their sole function is to heat water. Hence, you need to conserve water to ensure its supply and reduce energy consumption.

3. Growing Vegetables and Fruits

It turns out that sustainable living goes beyond just saving energy. You can also help the environment by growing your own fruits and vegetables at home.

By producing your own food, you can reduce transportation emissions resulting from distributing food to consumers.

4. Creating a Communal Compost Bin

Making your own compost at home might already sound pretty normal. However, you can encourage more people to care about the environment and start practicing sustainable living by setting up a communal compost bin.

You can coordinate with your neighborhood association (RT/RW) to set up community composting stations across the residential complex so residents can easily deposit their organic waste into these bins.

5. Become an Eco-Friendly Volunteer

Want to make a positive impact on the environment and society? You can participate in eco-friendly volunteer activities, such as tree planting, waste management, or village cleanup initiatives.

You can also join a community or participate in environmental campaigns to contribute to sustainability programs.

One campaign you can join is Indonesia Asri. Here, you can take part in various programs that benefit the Earth through #AksiAsri, such as waste sorting during Operasi Semut.

You can also share your story about practicing sustainable living and inspire one another to create a greener Indonesia through Jejak Asri.

Interestingly, you can not only invite others to practice sustainable living together but also have the chance to win prizes worth millions of rupiah if selected as a winner!

So, share your story about sustainable living before October 16, 2026. For more information about activities in Indonesia Asri, visit our website now!
