Understanding Energy Conservation and Its Importance

By Tim Indonesia Asri

Have you ever noticed how much energy we use in a single day? From turning the lights on and charging our cell phones to operating various electronic devices, almost all of our activities depend on energy. Therefore, its use needs to be managed properly.

This is where energy conservation comes in. Energy conservation is a concept of using energy more wisely and efficiently without reducing its benefits.

Let’s take a closer look at the full explanation to understand why energy conservation is important and how to apply it in your daily life!

What Is Energy Conservation?

Energy conservation is a series of actions aimed at using energy more efficiently and wisely without reducing its benefits or productivity.

In other words, the goal of energy conservation is not to make us stop using energy altogether but to ensure that energy is used as needed and not wasted.

The concept of energy conservation goes beyond simply turning off lights or reducing electricity usage. More than that, energy conservation encompasses adopting more efficient technologies, optimizing energy management across sectors, and formulating policies that encourage wise and sustainable energy use.

One example of the Indonesian government’s commitment is the release of Government Regulation (PP) Number 33 of 2023 on Energy Conservation. This regulation serves as the foundation for implementing energy conservation across various sectors, ranging from buildings and industry to transportation and public facilities.

The importance of using energy wisely is also commemorated annually through World Energy Conservation Day, celebrated on December 14. This observance aims to raise global public awareness of the importance of ensuring energy availability by adopting more efficient daily habits.

This occasion also serves as a reminder that energy conservation is a collective responsibility. The more individuals, communities, and businesses that practice it, the greater their contribution to ensuring energy availability and supporting sustainable development for future generations.

Why Is Energy Conservation Important?

Have you ever wondered why energy conservation has been discussed more frequently in recent years? The reason is not merely to save on electricity bills. Energy conservation plays a vital role in ensuring that energy supplies remain sufficient to meet society’s needs, both now and in the future.

In this regard, why should we start conserving energy now? As the population grows, technology advances, and economic activity increases, Indonesia’s energy demand continues to rise.

This increase in energy use is also reflected in data from Our World in Data, which shows that total annual electricity consumption in 2024 reached approximately 371.54 TWh. This figure represents an increase compared to previous years. This trend indicates that electricity use continues to rise, thus necessitating efforts to use it more efficiently.

If energy use is not managed wisely starting from now, energy demand will continue to rise and could put greater pressure on future energy availability.

Therefore, energy conservation must be implemented as early as possible to make energy use more efficient while supporting energy security for future generations.

Additionally, using energy more efficiently helps reduce the overexploitation of natural resources and curbs carbon emissions resulting from energy consumption. This way, these efforts preserve environmental quality while supporting more sustainable development.

Interestingly, when energy needs are managed more efficiently, the demand for new power plants can also be reduced. This helps alleviate pressure on natural areas and wildlife habitats that could be impacted by energy infrastructure development.

These benefits remain relevant, even when energy development comes from renewable energy sources. Additionally, energy conservation helps reduce the amount of pollutants produced by fossil fuel use. By conserving energy, we can better preserve the quality of the environment.

Examples of Energy Conservation in Practice

Essentially, energy conservation can begin with simple habits that we practice consistently. These steps can be applied in various places you frequently visit, starting from home to school and the office. Examples of energy conservation include the following:

Energy Conservation at Home

Home is the easiest place to start conserving energy. Simple habits, such as turning the lights off in unoccupied rooms, unplugging chargers after use, and taking advantage of natural light and air circulation during the day, can help reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

Additionally, choosing energy-efficient appliances and using them only as needed is equally important. This way, energy use in your home becomes more efficient without compromising your comfort.

Furthermore, many advanced technologies are emerging today that not only simplify daily activities but also help conserve energy, such as smart homes, which consist of smart devices that can be operated using sensors or via a smartphone. This way, you no longer have to go back and forth turning off electronic devices when they’re not in use.

Energy Conservation in Schools

Schools also play a vital role in fostering the habit of using energy wisely from an early age. When the entire school community participates, energy use can become more efficient while creating a more comfortable learning environment. Some implementations include:

  • Turning off lights, projectors, or fans after class activities are finished.
  • Utilizing natural lighting when possible in the classroom.
  • Using electronic devices only as needed and not leaving them on continuously.

Energy Conservation in the Office

In the workplace, energy conservation can help create more efficient operations while boosting productivity. Simple steps taken collectively can have a significant impact. Examples of these practices include:

  • Turning off computers, monitors, and work devices after working hours end.
  • Use lights and air conditioning only in areas that are currently in use.
  • Take advantage of energy-saving features on computers, printers, and other electronic devices.
