Getting to Know the Types of Living Environments Around Us

By Tim Indonesia Asri

We may not realize it, but our environment comprises various interconnected components that influence one another. These relationships form a system that not only supports human life but also all living creatures.

So, what are the functions that make the environment so important for life? Check out some environmental functions below to understand their role in supporting the survival of humans, animals, and plants, as well as in maintaining ecosystem balance!

Functions of the Environment

Functions of the Environment

The environment plays a very important role in sustaining life on Earth. Given its crucial role, environmental preservation must be sustained so that its benefits continue to be felt by both current and future generations.

In Indonesia, these efforts are supported by Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management, which emphasizes the importance of sustainable environmental management to maintain the quality of life and ecosystem balance.

Providing Natural Resources

The environment provides various natural resources that support the lives of humans, animals, and plants.

These natural resources include water, air, soil, forest products, minerals, and various energy sources used in different aspects of life.

Various environmental resources play an important role in meeting daily needs. Water is used for drinking, cooking, and maintaining cleanliness, while land is used for agriculture to produce food.

Not only do natural resources meet basic needs, but they also drive various economic activities. The agriculture, fisheries, forestry, mining, and tourism sectors all rely heavily on environmental resources.

A Habitat for Living Beings

The environment serves as a habitat for humans, animals, and plants. Every living being needs a suitable environment to obtain food, water, and air, and to find protection and enough space to grow, develop, and sustain life.

In the environment, various living beings, or biodiversity, interact and form relationships that support the balance of the ecosystem. These interactions create connections that make each component have an important role in maintaining the sustainability of life.

For example, plants produce the oxygen humans and animals need to breathe and also serve as a food source for many organisms.

Meanwhile, animals play a role in the pollination of flowers, seed dispersal, and the smooth running of the food chain.

Not just animals and plants, humans are also part of the ecosystem and have a big responsibility in preserving the environment.

As the beings that use natural resources the most, humans also play an important role in environmental conservation efforts.

For example, disposing of our trash in its proper place, separating our waste by category before disposal, and conserving energy and water to reduce negative impacts on the environment.

Supporting Various Human Activities

Almost all human activities, whether to meet basic needs or engage in economic activities, depend on the resources and space provided by the environment.

For instance, fertile land is used for farming to produce food, while rivers, lakes, and the sea provide livelihoods for people in the fishing sector.

Not only that, but the environment also provides space for residential development, transportation facilities, educational institutions, and recreational areas.

Having a clean and healthy environment can boost comfort, productivity, and the quality of life for people in carrying out various activities.

Types of Living Environment

Types of Living Environment

The environment can be divided into several types based on its characteristics and the elements that make it up. Each type of environment has a different role, but they are interconnected in supporting life on Earth.

In general, there are two types of living environments: natural and man-made. Here is the explanation:

Natural Environment

A natural environment forms without human intervention and consists of biotic and abiotic components that interact to create an ecosystem that supports the lives of various living beings.

Biotic components in the natural environment include humans, animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Meanwhile, abiotic components include water, air, soil, sunlight, temperature, and various other physical elements that support life.

The interaction between biotic and abiotic components allows various natural processes to occur in balance, such as the water cycle, food chains, and nutrient cycles. This balance plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity and the sustainability of natural resources.

Examples of natural environments include forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, swamps, and grasslands. In addition to being habitats for various species, natural environments provide natural resources and life support that help maintain the balance of Earth’s ecosystems.

Artificial Environment

An artificial environment is intentionally created or modified by humans to meet certain needs. Unlike natural environments, these environments are formed through planning and construction, so they serve more directed functions in line with human needs.

Artificial environments are generally designed for various purposes, such as housing, economic activities, education, transportation, and recreation. Examples include residential areas, highways, bridges, reservoirs, rice fields, city parks, industrial zones, and various other public facilities.

The existence of artificial environments greatly helps humans carry out daily activities and improve their quality of life. However, their development still needs to take environmental balance into account to avoid damaging the surrounding natural ecosystem.

That concludes the explanation about the types of living environments and their various functions in supporting the life of humans, animals, and plants. Hopefully, by understanding the role of the living environment, you can become more caring about its preservation and start adopting more eco-friendly habits in your daily life.
